Two months and no word from Daryl had her wanting to drive back to Huntsville and demand to know why he just let her walk away as he did. When she told him to get out of her apartment, after saying that he wasn’t willing to try the long-distance thing with her, she thought for sure that he’d come to his senses and come back. She expected him to show up on her doorstep and beg her to take him back. She would have too, but that never happened. He didn’t even stop by to see how she was getting along while packing up her apartment. He never stopped in to say goodbye and the way that they left things had her feeling pretty damn low. Especially now. She was pregnant with his baby and there was no way that she’d be able to tell him that—not yet at least.

Katie had started feeling bad about a month and a half ago. She had moved to New York and started her new job, and she honestly believed that she had just worn herself out. She wasn’t ready to face the fact that she had missed two periods. She was ignoring that point altogether. She finally went to a walk-in clinic and explained her symptoms to a very patient nurse who asked her how many periods she had missed and she finally had to come to terms with the fact that pregnancy was a possibility.

After she took the test, and the results were positive, she demanded a second test, just to be sure. Of course, the nurse obliged, but she was sure that she was rolling her eyes at her and that just plain pissed her off. When the second test came back positive, the nurse offered to do a blood test, but it wasn’t necessary. Between the two tests, Katie realized that she was fighting a battle she couldn’t win. She gave up and accepted defeat, but she had no idea what to do next. She had just started her dream job and having to go in to tell them that she was pregnant wasn’t an idea she liked. So, she concealed her pregnancy for as long as possible, wearing baggy sweaters and leggings or baggy dresses, but sooner or later, people were going to be able to tell that she was expecting. Katie wasn’t sure what she would do then, but she’d figure it out. What she was sure of, was that she needed to tell someone or she was going to explode. The only person she could think to call was Bea. If anyone would have some answers for her, it would be her best friend.

Every time she called Bea, she seemed to have some kind of sixth sense that Katie was thinking about her, and always picked up the phone on the first ring. Half the time, she would call Katie before she even got the chance to dial Bea’s number. “You thinking about me again?” Bea asked. She could hear her friend’s smile through the phone.
